INTRODUCTION :)
- In 1939,Chung Cheng was built at 60 Kim Yam road.In English , the school was called Shiang Kai Sek secondary school. The founding principal was Zhuang Zhulin and the first school supervisor was Lim Bo Seng, who was a war hero. The founding chairman of the school Management Board was Aw Boon Haw.
- In 1942, the school stopped classes because of the Japanese occupation. Back then,Chung Cheng was still an all boys' school. However , after the Japanese occupation which ended in 1945,Chung Cheng started accepting female students which were older than average were also accepted into the school.
- Soon after accepting different types of students,Lin Shi Wang bought a piece of land in Goodman road and built a school there and named it Chung Cheng High School Main and renamed the one at Kim Yam road,Chung Cheng High School Branch.
- In 1954,Chung Cheng participated in the National Service riots.On 13 May 1954, there were chaos and violence erupted when hundreds of students clashed with the police and Chung Cheng students were one of them.In the end,it resulted in 26 people injured and 45 students arrested.
- In 1955, another riots, known as the Hock Lee Bus Riot, happened on April 23. Workers from Hock Lee Amalgamated Bus Company and some Chinese students, including students from Chung Cheng High School, began to go on a strike.
- Why did the workers protest?They were against poor working conditions, long work hours and low pay.
- What did they do?The strikers stopped the buses from leaving the depots and crippled the City's entire transport system.
- The police tried to break up the students and strikers using water cannon and tear gas, but they retaliated by stoning the policemen adn buses, so, two police officers died as a result. This riot happened between Alexandra Road and Tiong Bahru Road. As a result, 4 people died and 31 people were injured.
CHINESE MIDDLE SCHOOL RIOT
- In 1956, there was a series of riots that broke out in the Singapore Chinese Community between the chinese middle schools including Chung Cheng High School. Students gathered and camped in school. It resulted in 13 people killed and more than 100 injured. Soon, the government decided to take action. On 26 October 1956, the police entered the schools and cleared the students using tear gas. Forced out from the school, they went towards the city. They damaged traffic lights and set cars on fire and they also overturn it. They also threw things like stones and bottles. Over the days, people were killed and hundreds of people were injured.
NATIONAL EXAMINATION BOYCOTT
- In 1961, Chinese medium schools students boycotted the national examination.Some protested outside the Ministry of Education(MOE). The boycott occured when the new PAP government wanted to standardise the education system of the English and Chinese medium schools.The Chinese medium schools saw it as an attempt to wipe out Chinese education thus causing the boycott.
CHUNG CHENG TURING INTO A SAP SCHOOL
- In 1979, Chung Cheng became a SAP(Special Assistance Plan) school and offered both English and Chinese as first languages and also offered an ACC(Aprecciation of Chinese Culture) subject. MSP(Malay Special Programme) was also offered.
CHUNG CHENG TURING INTO AN AUTONOMOUS SCHOOL
- In 1996, Chung Cheng became an Autonomous School because there was consistent excellent GCE "O" level results.
